[ARCHIVED] PRESS RELEASE: Carlton County COVID-19 update 7/29/20

Carlton County COVID-19 update 7/29/20

General Updates:

For updated case counts around the state, please continue to reference the situation map, updated by the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) daily at 11am here (includes county-specific case count). MDH continues to do the main investigation of each case, and Carlton County Public Health staff will follow-up when needed.

Statewide, of the 52,947 lab-confirmed cases on MDH’s website, 310 are currently hospitalized and 46,636 no longer need isolation. Please visit the MN Department of Corrections website for more cases specific to those who are incarcerated. For any questions related to the COVID-19 pandemic, call the Minnesota Helpline at 651-297-1304 or 1-800-657-3504, Monday-Friday: 9am-4pm.

As of July 25, 2020, per the Governor’s Executive Order 20-81, people in Minnesota are required to wear a face covering in all public indoor spaces and businesses, unless alone. Additionally, workers are required to wear a face covering when working outdoors in situations where social distancing cannot be maintained. Research has shown that use of face coverings can greatly reduce the risk of infection when combined with other prevention efforts such as social distancing and hand hygiene. For more information about face coverings and the Executive Order, please see the “Frequently Asked Questions About the Requirement to Wear Face Coverings” page on MDH’s website.

On July 30th, the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) and Governor Walz will share Minnesota’s strategy to educate students and keep communities healthy during the 2020-21 school year. MDE has also partnered with MDH in this strategy to best support students, educators and families.

COVID Cares offers free telephone support (MN Psychological Association): Free telephone support 833-HERE4MN (833-437-3466), 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., 7 days a week, now through August 31, 2020. The COVID Cares Support Service is a free telephone support service staffed by volunteer licensed mental health and substance use disorder personnel. The volunteers are available for 20-minute support calls to listen, share resources and tools, and talk with all Minnesotans experiencing stress.

Additional Health Recommendations:

Companies around the world are at various steps in research for a COVID-19 vaccination. When a vaccine becomes available, it will be distributed using Point of Dispensing Clinics (POD’s) locally. Carlton County has had a POD plan in existence for many years, through Emergency Preparedness efforts, and a team has been meeting to refine the plan for COVID-19 specific distribution. As soon as a vaccine is available, the public will be made aware of the process, location, and other details for receiving it.

Mental Wellbeing Tip of the Day:

Work some omega-3 fatty acids into your diet - they are linked to decreased rates of depression, among their many benefits. Fish oil supplements work, but eating your omega-3’s in foods like wild salmon, flaxseeds or walnuts also helps build healthy gut bacteria.
